On February 10, 2023, the Carolina Mountain Club added a large bear box about 100 yards up the trail from the shelter. They also refurbished the shelter sleep platform to fix the pronounced bowing in the middle. Also did some minor repairs to the picnic table. The shelter still has cables for hoisting food too.
