You have to hike down a steep quarter mile, but its worth it for clear cold water. The spur trail heads down from just past the Privy and is on a blue-blazed trail. Grab enough so you won't have to go back down, or better yet sucker someone else into getting it!

Nice large structure nestled in a rocky knoll with 8 bunks and a large loft which could accommodate another 6-10. Has a firepit, picnic table, bear box, mouldering-composting privy and tent platform with a view. There are a few tent pads as well. It sits next to a cool chasm called the Ice Gulch which often has ice trapped in the lower reaches year round. If you get there early there are rock walls you can boulder on. This also happens to be perfect Porcupine habitat and you will often see evidence of them (gnawing on the salty boards of the shelter where hikers sit) and I have seen them several times. Year round water source is a quarter mile descent to the bottom of the Ice Gulch Ravine. It is cold and crystal clear- for much of the year a stream flows right next to the shelter- this water is dark with tannins and never as cold. The hike to the water source is miserable after a long day- grab enough so you won't have to go down to it again! Make sure you have a water-scoop of some sort (I use a quart ziplock baggie) as the flow is quite reduced from mid-summer until the fall rains arrive.
